斑马斑马Zebras奇蹄目马科斑马属4种兽类的通称。因身上有起保护作用的斑纹而得名。广州动物园中的斑马斑马为非洲特产。南非洲产山斑马,除腹部外,全身密布较宽的黑条纹,雄体喉部有垂肉。非洲东部、中部和南部产普通斑马,由腿至蹄具条纹或腿部无条纹。非洲南部奥兰治和开普敦平原地区产拟斑马,身长约2.7米,鸣声似雁叫,仅头部、肩部和颈背有条纹,腿和尾白色,具深色背脊线。东非还产一种格式斑马,体格最大,耳长(约20厘米)而宽,全身条纹窄而密,因而又名细纹斑马。山斑马喜在多山和起伏不平的山岳地带活动;普通斑马栖于平原草原;细纹斑马栖于炎热、干燥的半荒漠地区,偶见于野草焦枯的平原。性谨慎,通常结成小群游荡,常遭狮子捕食。斑马是珍奇的观赏动物,但由于人们追求其皮和肉曾大量捕杀,其中拟斑马已于1872年绝迹,山斑马也濒临灭绝。
