大戟科大戟科Euphorbiaceae双子叶植物纲蔷薇亚纲的一个大科。草本、灌木或乔木,体内常有乳白色液汁。叶通常互生,单叶,稀复叶,有托叶,基部或叶柄上有时有腺体。花单性,雌雄同株或异株,聚生成各种花序,通常为聚伞花序或特殊的杯状聚伞花序(大戟花序);有些属的种类有花萼而无花瓣,也有的花萼和花瓣均无;萼片离生或合生,覆瓦状或镊合状排列;有花盘或退化为腺体;雄花:雄蕊与花被片同数,或2倍,或极多或很少或1(在大戟属整朵花仅含1裸露雄蕊);花丝离生或联合成柱状,花药2~4室,退化子房有或无;雌花:退化雄蕊有或无;子房上位,通常3室,稀1至多室,每室有胚珠1~2颗,生于中轴胎座上,花柱与子房室同数。果多数为蒴果,成熟时分裂成3瓣,有时不开裂而成浆果状或核果状。该科包括宽子叶类和窄子叶类2类,叶下珠亚科、大戟亚科、Porantheroideae和Ricinocarpoideae4亚科,10族,共约300属5000多种,遍布全世界,主要产于热带和亚热带地区。中国约72属450多种,遍布中国各省区,主要产于西南至台湾。大戟属是该科最大的一属。一年生或多年生草本,稀为灌木或仙人掌状的肉质植物,植株各部有丰富的白色乳汁。单叶互生或对生,有时轮生,全缘,稀有锯齿。顶生或腋生的杯状聚伞花序,稀单花。总苞辐射对称或稍偏斜,顶端4~5裂,稀6~8裂,裂片全缘或撕裂,裂片弯缺处通常有宽大的腺体;无花被,常具大而鲜艳的花瓣状附属体;花丝短,并有明显的关节;雌花生于花序的中央,有长的子房柄伸出总苞之外。花瓣状的附属体3~6裂,子房3室,每室有胚珠1颗。蒴果成熟时分裂为3个2瓣裂的分果爿。约2000种,中国约产100种,广布于全国各地。该科以盛产橡胶、油料、药材、鞣料、淀粉、木材等重要经济植物著称。橡胶树属是主要产橡胶的植物。油桐属产最好的干性油。乌桕产蜡和油。蓖麻是重要的药用植物。巴豆为泻药,又可作杀虫剂,也产单宁。木薯是热带重要的食用植物之一,有肥厚的块状根,极富淀粉,是工业上用粉主要原料之一。余甘子的果可食,维生素C含量高。该科多数种类有毒,南非产的好望角毒漆是已知有毒植物中最毒的一种。变叶木属、叶下珠属、麻风树属及大戟属等广泛栽培作观赏植物。
