蓼科蓼科Polygonaceae双子叶植物纲的一科。一年生或多年生草本,稀为灌木或小乔木。茎通常具膨大的节。叶为单叶,互生,有托叶鞘。花两性,稀为单性,辐射对称;花序由若干小聚伞花序排成总状、穗状或圆锥状,花有时单生;花被片3~6;雄蕊6~9,极少为16,有花盘;雌蕊1,子房上位,1室。瘦果卵形,具3棱或扁平,通常包于宿存的花被内;胚弯生或直立,胚乳丰富。约40属800种,主要分布于北温带,少数在热带。中国产11属200余种。蓼属分布于全国各地;大黄属分布于西北、西南及华北的山区;沙拐枣属、木蓼属分布于西北的荒漠、半荒漠地区;冰岛蓼属分布于西北及青藏高原的高山区;翼蓼属、翅果蓼属为中国的特有属。红蓼该科分3个亚科:酸模亚科、蓼亚科和海葡萄亚科。该科药用植物如掌叶大黄、药用大黄等是中国传统的中药材;扁蓄、何首乌、拳参亦为中药材。栽培作物有荞麦等。观赏植物有红蓼、珊瑚藤等。该科植物有些种类为蜜源植物。
