目录学目录学bibliography研究文献目录工作的一般原理及形成和发展的一般规律的科学，是目录工作实践经验的理论概括和总结。对目录学的研究对象问题存在着几种不同的看法，多数学者认为目录学的研究对象是文献目录工作，其目的是寻求以书目索引等作为连接日益增长的文献系统与用户系统之间桥梁的理论基础和技术手段，不断扩展和改进文献系统与用户系统之间联系的途径与方法，使任何文献能为任何需要者获得。中国11世纪已有“目录之学”的称谓，当时称熟知文献、擅于利用目录增进学识的人为知目录之学。清乾隆时期是古典目录学的鼎盛时期，目录学被称为显学。宋代郑樵的《通志·校雠略》和清代章学诚的《校雠通义》是中国有关目录学的重要著作。在欧美，bibliography一词既用来表示记录出版物的科学技术，也表示这种技术所产生的特定产物，即书目。17～18世纪之间，逐步形成了近代书目与目录学的基本概念。目录学的内容，主要包括文献的揭示与记录，书目索引编制法，书目情报服务以及目录学史等。目录学的分支学科，包括普通目录学：研究目录学的一般原理，编制书目索引的基本方法；专科目录学：研究各学科文献的积累、整理和利用；比较目录学：研究中外目录学发展的特性。此外，还有侧重于对图书版本状况进行考证研究的分支学科，称版本目录学。
