《韩诗外传》 西汉初年记述前代史实、传闻的著作。作者韩婴,生卒年不详。燕人。汉文帝时为博士,景帝时为常山王太傅,武帝时曾与大儒辩论于朝廷。他是汉初传《诗》三家之一的《韩诗》创始人,也授《易》,传授地区主要在燕、赵间。据《汉书·艺文志》载,其著作有《韩故》、《韩内传》、《韩外传》、《韩说》及《韩氏易》等。但今存仅《韩诗外传》10卷,紊乱脱落,已非原本。其佚文散见《文选》李善注及唐、宋类书。 韩婴说《诗》主要是借《诗》发挥他的政治思想,所以多述孔子轶闻、诸子杂说和春秋故事,引《诗》以证事,并非述事以明《诗》。在汉代,《韩诗》即以《内传》、《外传》著称。《史记·儒林传》说:"韩生推《诗》之意而为《内、外传》数万言,其语颇与齐、鲁间殊,然其归一也。"而《汉书·艺文志》则认为韩婴作《诗》传,"或取《春秋》,采杂说,咸非其本义"。褒贬不同,但都说明《韩诗》著力于传,而非训诂。《外传》的思想,大致以荀子思想为主,反复强调隆礼重法,尊士养民,也间采孟子及韩非有关言论。全书取《荀子》文多达44条,因而从宋代王应麟至清代汪中、严可均等学者都认为《韩诗》出于荀子,是"荀卿子之别子"(汪中《述学·荀卿子通论》)。而书中引《荀子·非十二子》文,则删除子思、孟子,也可见其不薄孟子,有所折中。 《外传》说《诗》,都是断章取义,触类引伸,与《诗》本意相径庭,使诗句成为一种比喻,借以牵强附会叙事说理。其文章体制大多先叙事或议论,篇末引《诗》一两句以证明。而同一两句诗,往往有两则以上的事例或理论,分条阐述。因此,这部《韩诗外传》既是关于《诗经》的重要著作,同时也是一部短文集,在汉初散文创作中别具特色。其中的历史故事或寓言多有所本,也有些艺术加工,擅长用对话发议论,露神情,见性格;其论述则多节录诸子原文,在取舍剪裁中见出己意,因而"文辞清婉,有先秦风"(晁公武《郡斋读书志》)。其中所述多历史故事,为刘向编《说苑》、《新序》、《列女传》所采录;赵晔撰《吴越春秋》也采取其中有关吴越的故事作素材。《说苑》等书中的故事已开古小说先声,《韩诗外传》则是衔接先秦诸子寓言、史传故事和《说苑》等书的单则故事之间的一个环节,在古小说发展史上当占一席地位。 有近人许维遹的《韩诗外传集释》。
