法国陆军在北非成功地应用英国费列特(ferret)侦察车后,1956年提供要求装备火力要强的类似车辆。样车的研制和生产由潘哈德公司承担,该公司于1959年完成了样车,并取名为潘哈德245型。萨维姆(saviem)和兵器研究与制造局的伊西莱穆利诺制造厂(defa-amx)也同时研制了样车。但经试验后法国陆军采用了潘哈德245型,并命名为aml。1961年交付法国陆军第一批定货。从此时起,aml便开始了大批量生产,而且其系列产品也在不断增加,不过目前仅用于出口。迄今为止,已生产aml车辆4800多辆。桑达克–奥斯特瑞尔有限公司(sandock-austral limited)获许可证在南非生产aml车辆,但命名为大羚羊(eland)。装备90炮塔的aml侦察车为全焊接钢车体。驾驶舱在前,战斗舱居中,动力舱在后。驾驶员居前部,有一个右开单扇舱盖,3个整体式潜望镜,夜间行驶时,中间一个可换为红外或微光潜望镜。
