徐州 中国古代中原东部军事重镇。古称彭城。位于今江苏省西北隅,邻近河南、山东、安徽等省。是水陆交通要冲,历为兵家争战之地,战略地位重要。最早为大彭氏国地。春秋战国时属宋,称彭城。秦置彭城县,属泗水郡。秦末,西楚霸王项羽建都于此。东汉末年,为徐州刺史部治所,遂也称徐州。此后,历代均为州、郡或府的治所。 徐州地处黄淮平原,东近黄海,西连中原,北依鲁南山区,南屏江淮水泽,陆路辐辏,水运畅通。附近原有汴(获)、泗汇流。沿汴水西通汴(梁)、洛(阳),经泗水南达杭州。宋代黄河南迁,夺汴、泗入淮。元代开通南北运河,溯河北上,可直达大都(今北京)。徐州周围,岗岭起伏,东有子房山、骆驼山以及泗水故道之百步洪(徐州洪)、吕梁洪要险,南有云龙山、凤凰山,北有九里山(九嶷山),西有楚王山等丘峦环抱,共为扼守徐州天然屏障。《读史方舆纪要》称:"彭城之地,南守则略河南、山东,北守则瞰淮泗","经营天下,岂可以彭城为后图哉"。 春秋战国以来,在徐州及其附近发生的大小战事逾150次之多。周简王十三年(公元前573),晋、楚争霸,楚联郑伐晋之盟国宋,夺取彭城;翌年,晋联合鲁、卫等国出兵围彭城,还彭城于宋。东汉初平四年(193)至建安五年(200),曹操、陶谦、刘备、吕布、袁术在此争战七年,彭城先后六次易手,最后为曹操占据,形成与袁绍对峙局面。南北朝时期,徐州为南北争夺重点,有"南国重镇,北门锁钥"之称,"彭城之得失,辄关南北之盛衰"。南朝宋元嘉七年(430),宋军以彭城为基地挥师北上,征伐北魏;元嘉二十七年,北魏太武帝率师攻宋,宋江夏王刘义恭进驻彭城,总统诸军,后魏军攻彭城,宋军据城坚守,魏军几攻不克;南朝宋泰始二年(466),徐州刺史薛安都降魏,彭城遂成为北魏进攻南朝的基地。唐建中二年(781),淄青节度使李正己父子反唐,占徐州,堵截江、淮漕运,朝廷震恐,遣朔方军数千人败淄青兵于徐州东南七里沟,漕运复通。明初,燕王朱棣欲夺帝位,于建文四年(1402)率师南下至徐州,守军闭城不出,朱棣设伏兵于九里山,诱歼徐州守军数千人,得以驱兵南进,破江淮防御,直取金陵。1938年,中国军队在徐州以北,进行了抗击日本侵略军的台儿庄战役(见徐州会战)。1949年,中国人民解放军与国民党军在徐州地区进行了淮海战役。今徐州已建成新兴工业城市,为京沪、陇海铁路交会处。
