《采用保真度准则的离散信源编码定理》 C.E.仙农关于信息论的著名论文,发表在1959年《无线电工程师协会会议录》第4部分(第142~163页)。仙农在本文中建立了率-失真理论的基本定理。率-失真理论解决有失真时的信息传输问题。特别是允许失真时连续信源可以纳入离散的范围,统一用编码进行处理,并对克服连续信源难以度量的困难有重要价值。本文主要引入了失真的定义,指出失真与代价间的关系,给出速率失真函数的概念,特别是建立了信源编码定理并指出这一理论与信道编码间存在对偶的关系。仙农得出的结论表明一切信源均可用编码表示,并且确立了用编码可以实现的数据压缩的目标,因而在理论上具有重要意义。率-失真理论的求解,显然也是一变分问题,但证明时仍用他所创立的"随机编码"证法,得到的结果只是一种存在性证明,不能给出具体实现途径。虽然速率-失真概念现在在理论上或实践上都已有很大发展,但无论从概念的引入和所解决的问题,以及所用的方法上,本文均有开创性的意义和重要的价值。
