包头职业技术学院是隶属于国防科工委与内蒙古自治区共建的高等职业技术学院。其前身是创建于1956年的国家级重点普通中等专业学校——包头机械工业学校。1994年成为原国家教委在全国首批选设的十所初中后五年制高等职业教育试点学校之一，1998年经原国家教委批准为内蒙古自治区第一所独立设置的高等职业技术学院。2003年被列为国家教育部首批高专院校人才培养工作水平评估试点的26所院校之一，评估结论为“良好”。 学院党委书记鲁鸿志，院长王茂元．学院位于包头市青山区，由主教学区与四个分教学区组成，占地面积20万平方米，建筑面积15万平方米。教学设施完善。学院现在专任教师287人，其中高级职称教师120人。另有兼职教师150人。学院以培养生产、建设、管理、服务等一线需要的高级应用型人才为主要目标，对学生实施职业技能考核鉴定，使学生毕业时可获得相应的专科证书和职业资格证书 ．学院设有机械工程系、电子工程系、车辆工程系和基础部四个系部，现开设普通高中毕业后三年制、中职毕业后三年制、初中毕业后五年制等高等学历教育共18个专业。其中“数控”、“二年制模具”两个专业被教育部批准为全国高职高专教学改革试点专业。＂模具＂专业同时被列为国家精品专业．我院是教育部指定承担“数控技术应用”专业、“汽车运输与维修”专业领域技能型紧缺人才培养培训任务的职业院校。目前全日制在校生人数近5000人。学生来自全国20多个省（市、自治区）。另外有31个专业的人本科学历教育。学院毕业生的文化基础扎实，专业技能突出，综合素质优良，赢得用人单位的一致好评。在其办学历史中已培养中、高级专门人才近20000人，其中不乏大型骨干企业的主要领导，生产、管理的中坚和技术能手。他们为学院争得了荣誉，树立了良好的形象。2003年毕业生就业率在内蒙古自治区同类院校中名列第二，就业单位遍及全国20个省（市自治区）60多家企事业单位。另毕业生的15%可专升本继续深造。目前学院正加大深化教育、教学改革力度，优化育人环境，为创建示范性高等职业技术学院不懈努力。
