星状沙丘又称金字塔沙丘（pyramid dune）。在多风向作用下形成的风积地貌。有一个高尖的峰顶，从尖顶向不同方向延伸出3个或更多沙脊（棱），各脊间是发育良好的三角形滑动面（棱面），坡度一般25～30°。丘体较高大，简单型的也在50米以上。可单个孤立或成群散布，也可彼此互相连接组成不规则的垄岗形（岗长一至数公里），垄岗间分布有沙垄或其它沙丘形态。棱面上发育有次生的沙丘者称为复合型星状沙丘。在阿尔及利亚，近圆形的复合型星状沙丘彼此孤立成群分布，直径平均0.9公里，高100～200米。星状沙丘间有次级沙丘分布。在中国巴丹吉林多为数个串连成巨大的垄岗，高达200～300米，长达5～10公里，称为线形复合型星状沙丘。
