赤泥  从铝土矿中提炼氧化铝后排出的工业固体废物。一般含氧化铁量大,外观与赤色泥土相似,因而得名。但有的因含氧化铁较少而呈棕色,甚至灰白色。铝土矿中铝含量高的,采用拜尔法炼铝,所产生的赤泥称拜尔法赤泥;铝土矿中铝含量低的,用烧结法或用烧结法和拜尔法联合炼铝,所产生的赤泥分别称为烧结法赤泥或联合法赤泥。赤泥的化学成分如下:      赤泥的物理性质:颗粒直径0.088~0.25毫米,比重2.7~2.9,容重0.8~1.0,熔点1200~1250℃。    生产 1吨氧化铝要排出0.6~2.0吨赤泥。有的国家把赤泥排入海中,因含有碱等有害物质而污染海洋,危害渔业生产。有的在陆地堆放,占用农田,污染水系,干燥后随风飘扬,又污染大气。为了减少污染,赤泥堆场底部应铺设不透水层,在赤泥堆上面铺土种植植物。但积极合理的办法是开展综合利用,如用赤泥生产建筑材料、土壤改良剂,以及回收其中的金属等。目前,烧结法赤泥已利用起来。    烧结法赤泥氧化钙含量高,适合制造建筑材料。中国在1963年开始用它作为普通水泥的生料。赤泥浆刚从氧化铝厂排出时液固比一般为3~4,先通过真空过滤机过滤,使赤泥浆含水率降至60%以下。一般采用三元组分(石灰石、赤泥、砂岩)配料,有时还配入铁粉,赤泥在生料中占25~35%。生料浆的煅烧工艺与一般的普通水泥生产基本相同。用赤泥烧制的水泥熟料各率值为:石灰饱和系数KH=0.88~0.92,硅酸率n=2.0~2.2,铝率P =0.7~1.2。用赤泥生产的425号普通硅酸盐水泥,符合中国国家标准GB175-77中规定的技术要求。此外,烧结法赤泥还可用以生产油井水泥、赤泥硅酸盐水泥、赤泥硅钙肥料等。联合法赤泥的利用同烧结法赤泥相似。    40年代以来,许多国家就拜尔法赤泥的综合利用提出了几十种方法,但绝大多数没有达到工业生产的要求,主要是由于这种赤泥浆不易干燥,脱水能耗大。另外,这种赤泥中铁和碱的含量高,也不利于制造水泥。如用以炼铁,其中的碱会腐蚀炉衬的耐火材料,赤泥中的氧化钛还会使炉渣粘度增加,造成高炉操作困难等。
