白骨顶  鹤形目秧鸡科骨顶属的 1种。又名骨顶鸡。除中、南美洲以外,广泛分布在世界各地。外形似鸡,体长约400~430毫米,体重约600~800克。通体近黑色,翅与尾羽沾褐,下体暗灰褐色。前额至嘴基有 1块大形白色角质额板,为本种的显著特征。嘴尖灰褐,基部淡红。胫部橙黄,腿和脚暗铅绿色,各趾缘具有分离的黑色瓣状蹼膜,适于游泳时划水以及在泥沼中涉行。雌雄羽色相似,但雌鸟的额板较窄小。    栖息于内陆水域的水草茂密地区,习性似野鸭,善游泳和潜水。啄食水生植物、鱼类和小型水生动物,也吃植物种子以及水稻、高粱等谷物。繁殖期间,雌雄共同在距水面不高处将水草弯折、编成盘状巢。每窝产卵 6~9枚。卵土黄色,上布紫色、灰褐色和黑褐色疏斑。雌雄共同孵卵,经20余天出雏。雏为早成性,体披黑色丝状绒羽,头和翅上杂有白色。雏鸟出壳后即能随双亲游泳觅食。迁徙和越冬时集结成百上千只的大群。    本种在中国分布的为指名亚种(Fulica a. atra),是长江流域以北广大地区的夏候鸟。迁徙时途经中国大部地区,在华南各省越冬。由于数量众多,肉质鲜美,是有较大经济价值的猎禽。
