宜昌市宜昌市简称宜。位于中国湖北省西部，长江三峡西陵峡东口、长江上、中游分界处。面积330平方千米，人口44.52万，有汉、回、土家、满等20个民族，以汉族人口居多。公元前3世纪即筑城堡，为楚国西部要塞。古称夷陵，历为郡、州、路、府和县治所。清初为夷陵州治。清顺治五年（1648）避讳，改为“彝陵”。雍正十三年（1735）升彝陵州为宜昌府，改彝陵县为东湖县。1912年废宜昌府，改东湖县为宜昌县。1949年7月16日划宜昌县城及近郊置省辖市。后几经变更，1979年复为省辖市。为长江中、上游重要中转港及鄂西水陆交通枢纽。60年代末期列为国家重点三线建设地区。1970年长江葛洲坝水利工程在此地建设，促进了国民经济的发展。已形成了西坝、铁路坝、伍家岗、宝塔河、五龙等工业区。是以葛宜昌市长江葛洲坝水利枢纽为主的水电工业城和华中电网的最大能源基地。工艺美术品以产黄杨木雕、山石盆景、黛釉陶、陶版壁画而享誉国内外。土特产有蜜橘、西陵特曲、夷陵春卷。中国著名旅游城，长江三峡风景名胜区旅游出发点。名胜古迹有三游洞、陆游泉、天然塔、南津关、下牢溪、刘封城遗址、紫阳龙洞、平湖风景区等。特别是宏伟的葛洲坝工程、集山、水、峡、洞、坝于一地，融三峡自然风光、人文景观、现代化建筑于一体，独具特色，吸引了大批中外游客。宜昌市长江葛洲坝
