菊石菊石ammonoid软体动物门头足纲的一个亚纲。是已绝灭的海生无脊椎动物,生存于中奥陶世至晚白垩世。菊石化石菊石壳以碳酸钙为主要成分。壳体以胎壳为中心在一个平面内旋卷,少数壳体呈直壳、螺卷或其他不规则形状。菊石动物在生长过程中周期性地由外套膜分泌出隔壁,因此壳体可以分为两部分:动物体栖居而没有隔壁的部分,称为住室;具有一系列隔壁的部分是气壳,被相邻两个隔壁所分隔的空间叫做气室;隔壁与壳壁的接触线叫做缝合线;每一个隔壁有一个圆形隔壁孔,为体管所在位置,通常位于腹部边缘,少数在背部或近中心位置。壳体表面有时平滑,有时有生长线纹、纵旋线纹、横肋、瘤、刺、沟、脊等装饰,菊石的壳口覆以口盖。菊石的系统分类中缝合线的特征具有特别重要的意义。每条缝合线可以分为壳体外表面的一段叫外缝合线,背部表面的一段叫内缝合线。缝合线的基本要素是叶和鞍。叶是缝合线向后弯曲的部分,鞍则是向前弯曲的部分。按照叶和鞍分布的位置,分别称为腹叶(或腹鞍)、背叶(或背鞍)、侧叶(或侧鞍)等。在侧面未完全变成独立的鞍和叶的一系列褶曲称为肋线系。按照叶和鞍的形态,可以将菊石缝合线归纳为无棱菊石式、棱菊石式、齿菊石式和菊石式。菊石通常分为9目约80个超科,约280个科和约2000个属,以及许多种和亚种等。菊石化石均产于浅海沉积的地层中,并与许多海生生物化石共生。通过研究,推测菊石栖居在热带至温带的有一定深度的海域,壳壁较厚和具粗强壳饰的类型是较不活动的类型;壳壁较薄、表面平滑和具尖饼状壳形者是较活动的栖居于较深水体的类型。菊石是划分和对比地层最有效的标准化石,可划分出颇为精细的菊石带。在中国古生代和中生代地层中所含的各种菊石,都具有重要的意义。
