火炬传递运动会于1928年5月17日至8月12日举行。7月28日,第9届奥运会举行了正式的开幕仪式。开始时鸣放了礼炮,同时会场上空有飞机编队飞过。场内修建的高塔上燃烧着熊熊火焰直到大会闭幕。火焰的火种取自奥林匹亚,首次采用聚光镜聚集阳光点燃火炬,然后通过接力传送,途经希腊、南斯拉夫,奥地利,德国4个国家,最后传到主办地。这是奥运会首次举行这种活动。不少史料记载,今日奥林匹克火炬传递是从这届开始的,大概缘由于此。不过,直到1934年国际奥委会才正式决定,从第十一届开始在开幕式上举行这项仪式。因此准确地说,燃烧奥林匹克火焰应是始于1936年柏林奥运会。为了突出希腊在奥林匹克运动中的重要地位,本届奥运会运动员的入场式由希腊队率先,东道主殿后,其他各按东道国文字排列。这种排列方法沿用至今。
