扬州八怪扬州八怪中国清代中期活跃于扬州的一批风格相近的画家。“八怪”最早由李玉棻《瓯钵罗室书画过目考》提出,包括金农、罗聘、李方膺、李鱓、黄慎、郑燮(见郑板桥)、高翔、汪士慎8人,亦有人将高凤翰、边寿民、闵贞等纳入八怪,今通称扬州画派。他们大多为中下层知识分子,富有正义感,不肯与世俗同流合污,或被罢官去职,或仕途多舛,流落扬州,卖画为生。他们大都擅花鸟,亦长于山水、人物,多以梅、兰、竹、菊、石、雁、鱼等为题材,表现自己清高绝俗的思想品格和孤傲的性格。有的则描绘贫民乞丐,表达对下层人民的同情。他们通过题跋诗文,赋予作品以更深的思想内涵。如郑燮以竹声比作民间的疾苦声,升华了作品的主题。他们在艺术上师承陈淳、徐渭、朱耷、石涛、高其佩等富有独创性的画家,其画注重水墨的表现力,笔墨纵横驰骋、直抒胸臆,不拘成法,被正统派视为“怪”,颇受贬抑。他们对近现代中国画的发展产生了重大影响。汪士慎《花卉册》之一
