雏鸟雏鸟youngbirds不能独立生活的幼小鸟类。按照雏鸟发育的情况，鸟类可以分为早成雏（离巢雏）和晚成雏（留巢雏）两类。早成雏孵出时眼睛已经睁开，耳朵能听，腿脚有力，全身被稠密绒羽，待身体上的水分干燥，可立即随亲鸟啄食，大多数鸡、鸭都属这一类。晚成雏孵出时，眼睛不能睁开，全身裸露，没有或只有少数绒羽，在巢内要停留相当时间（15天至几个月不等），出飞后要由亲鸟教给取食方法。属于这一类的有鸣禽、鸠鸽、啄木鸟、猛禽、鹈鹕等。有的鸟（如鸥类）在形态上为早成性，在习性上却为晚成性，属于居间类型。一般早成性鸟类所筑的巢非常简陋，晚成性鸟类因幼雏要留在巢内一段时间，所营的巢比较精巧牢固。雏鸟孵出后，身体有些部位发展很快，如嘴和跗蹠在离巢时已接近成鸟，但翅和尾部仍要继续生长一些时候。晚成性幼雏留巢时间的长短也不相同：雀类与孵卵日期大致相同，树洞内营巢鸟类要长些。亲鸟对幼雏的喂养并非由雌雄平均分担。山麻雀最初由雄鸟带食喂雏，3～5天后雌雄才共同哺雏；猛禽雌鸟在雏鸟孵出时并不出巢寻食，育雏工作主要由雄鸟负担。晚成性雏鸟是变温的，随着内部器官的发育、产热和神经调节机制的完善以及羽衣的出现，才转变为恒温。晚成性雏鸟食量大，很多种类以吃昆虫为主。
