田纳西号1917年5月开工，1919年4月下水，1920年6月开始服役。属美国海军田纳西级战列舰此后的20年中，田纳西号除偶尔到东海岸访问外，一直以加州圣·佩德罗（san pedro）为基地在太平洋服役，并且在一系列的演习中取得了优异的成绩。1940年在夏维夷海域完成演习后，随太平洋舰队驻留珍珠港，罗斯福总统希望此举能对日本在亚洲的扩张起到威慑作用。1941年12月7日晨，日本海军偷袭珍珠港时，田纳西号停在西弗吉尼亚号的内侧，袭击开始5分钟后，舰上的高射炮已经开火，并且发动机也已启动，但并没有能够移动。田纳西号外侧的西弗吉尼亚号在被多条鱼雷击中后很快沉没，阻塞了田纳西号移动的路线。随后，田纳西号也被几颗炸弹击中，但损失并不严重，真正给田纳西号造成伤害的是亚利桑那号爆炸后残骸和燃油大火。田纳西号上的火势不久得到控制，但周围的大火还是烧了两天。对比其他舰只的损伤，田纳西号只能算是轻伤。在西海岸进行了维修和改装后，1942年3月，田纳西号与马里兰号、科罗拉多号重新返回战场。但这些战列舰发现他们在太平洋上已经失去了主角的地位，战场已不再停留在表面，而和天空融为一体。但这些老式战舰仍就尽心尽力地完成着他们的使命。在中途岛田纳西号只作为后备部队，没有得到发炮的机会。为真正与其它舰只协调，1942年8月，田纳西号再次回西海岸进行彻底的现代化改装。改装中增加了田纳西号的对空和对鱼雷的防御能力，这使其适应其护航的任务。1943年5月之后，田纳西号作为火力支援和护航舰队参加了参加了太平洋大部分的两栖作战，包括北太平洋收复阿留申群岛的任务、马绍尔群岛、塞班岛、关岛、菲律宾战役。1944年10月收复菲律宾的战役中，24日夜间的莱特湾海战中，双方的战列舰终于有机会的对垒，田纳西号和其它5五艘战列舰打了一个漂亮的伏击战。其中由于田纳西、加利福尼亚号和西弗吉尼亚号装配较为现代化的火控系统，所以较其他战列舰有一定的优势。其间田纳西共发射了69发14英寸的炮弹。随后，田纳西号又进行部分现代化改装。1945年后，田纳西号继续作为火力支援参加了硫磺岛和冲绳岛的登陆战役。1947年2月，田纳西号转入后备役。1959年，正式退役。田纳西号在二战中共获得10枚战斗之星勋章。标准排水量 32300吨长度 624英尺主炮 4座3联装14英寸主炮副炮 26座5英寸火炮设计功率 28600马力设计航速 21节设计舰员 1500人
