彗星彗星comet绕太阳运行的云雾状的小天体。俗称扫帚星。中国古代还有孛星、妖星等几十种称谓。西汉的马王堆彗星图说明，2000多年前中国已有了认真的观测记录。利用望远镜平均每年可发现10多颗，但肉眼可见的大彗星却不多见。脏雪球似的彗核是其中心密集部分，核外雾状包层称彗发，两者合称彗头。核一般仅几～十几千米，质量1012千克左右，很少有超过1020千克的。当彗星接近太阳时，彗头急剧增大到几万千米，并生出长几百万甚至几千万千米的彗尾，但彗发与彗尾中的物质密度极小，恒星光可以毫不减弱地穿越。已知约1000多颗彗星中，69.9％的轨道是抛物线或双曲线，称为非周期彗星，这些非周期彗星可能一去不返；以椭圆轨道运行的彗星称周期彗星，周期彗星不足1／3，其中又有一半轨道偏心率接近于1。大多数彗星的轨道都很扁长。以周期200年为界分别称长周期彗星和短周期彗星。彗星轨道还极易受摄动而改变。哈雷彗星和恩克彗星是最早按预言回归的两颗彗星。彗星很可能都发源于离太阳几十亿千米的奥尔特云中，估计该云中包含着1011颗彗星。由于彗星探测器已多次考察了彗星，彗星研究已取得了许多重大的突破。除太阳引力以外，影响彗星的因素还有来自各大行星的引力，对短周期彗星来说，木星的影响尤为显著。彗星不断抛射物质，而且彗核分裂成几块甚至瓦解的情况也屡见不鲜。北京时间1994年7月17日4时15分至1994年7月22日16时，彗星和木星相撞。彗木相撞中，苏梅克-列维9号彗星的21块碎块，每块碎块直径约1～4.5千米，以21万千米／时的速度相继撞向距地球7.7亿千米的木星，在木星上留下许多斑痕，并释放出大量能量。即彗木相撞彗星碎块撞击木星释放的总能量相当于40万亿吨TNT，瞬间产生的高温接近3万摄氏度。中国科学院北京、上海、南京、云南四大天文台和乌鲁木齐天文站等11个光学射电观测站点全都观测到了彗木撞击现象，获得了撞击过程的闪光现象，撞击形成的暗斑，撞击区域光谱，木星的电波发射等极其珍贵的观测资料。这是人类第一次成功预报和观测小天体撞击行星事件。对掌握小天体撞击行星的预报规律、揭开6500万年前造成恐龙大灭绝的小天体撞击地球的奥秘等具有重大意义。1994年慧星与木星相撞时爆炸的情形
