醚醚ether通式为R-O-R′的一类化合物。在醚的结构中，氧原子与两个烃基相连，烃基可以相同，也可不相同，相同的称为简单醚，不相同的称为混合醚。烃基可为芳烃基或脂肪烃基。两个烃基可以彼此相连，形成环醚，如环氧乙烷。多个氧原子分别与碳原子相连而形成的环状醚称为大环醚或冠醚。链型分子中如果含有多个碳-氧-碳(≡C-O-C≡)结构单元，则称为缩二醇醚，如缩二乙二醇二甲醚(CH3OCH2CH2)2O。一般醚以与氧相连的烃基加醚字命名，例如，C2H5-O-C2H5称二乙基醚，简称乙醚；CH3-O-C2H5称甲基乙基醚，简称甲乙醚。环醚一般用俗名。醚与烃类很相似，化学性质比较稳定，在常温下与强碱和碱金属不发生反应，与强酸可形成盐，如：此反应产物再进一步与氢卤酸作用，则生成卤代烃和醇，醇还可与氢卤酸反应生成卤代烃。醚在避光的情况下与氯或溴反应，可生成氯代醚或溴代醚。醚在光助催化下与空气中的氧作用，生成过氧化合物。在工业中，通常是在酸或氧化铝作用下由醇间失水制取。实验室中常用醇钠与卤代烷反应制取。多数醚是很好的溶剂，高沸点的醚可用作反应介质。
